Pangea was awarded two contracts from USACE Kansas City to install Modular Schools and shelters in Joplin, Missouri for tornado recovery work. Pangea performed the East Middle School at Crossroads Industrial and Joplin High School at Memorial Campus projects.

The scope of work for the Joplin High School at the Memorial Campus project included the installation of: 2 Science Laboratories with workstations, instructor’s desk, sinks and eye wash facilities; an Industrial Laboratory; 2 Science Classrooms; a Chemistry Laboratory and classroom.

The East Middle School project included the installation of: a Kitchen with cooking and food preparation equipment capable of producing 1,300 meals per day including dry storage, cooler and freezer units; Band Classroom; Choir Classroom; Orchestra Room; 2 Science Laboratories with workstations; Bathroom facilities; 60 x 100 pre-fabricated metal sprung structure to be used as a gym facility; and storm shelters to be used as temporary schools. This was an emergency response award after the Joplin Missouri school system was hit especially hard by a tornado on May 22, 2011.

Pangea was awarded a task order under a MATOC contract with Region 3 of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for work at the Jordan River National Fish Hatchery in Elmira, MI. The work included construction of a new treatment building to house filtration equipment complete and ready to provide effluent treatment. The equipment included multiple drum microscreen units coupled with an optional belt filtration system, concrete sumps, backwashing systems, piping controls, alarms, and a back-up power supply. All work was to be completed while maintaining a consistent flow of water from 2,000 gpm to 6,000 gpm to keep the hatchery operational.

Pangea constructed the new Recreation Center, new Information Center and Entrance project for the United States Department of Labor in St. Louis.

The Center is a one- story, slab-on-grade structure with an arced frontal footprint. The other segment of the project was a new Information Center and entrance near the northwest corner of the property.

The new building and building addition included: the demolition of existing structures, excavation and compaction of soils, placement of concrete, structural steel construction, installation of electrical and mechanical systems, frame and finish carpentry, roofing, flooring, asphalt repair, and site restoration and landscaping.

Center Wing Renovation, Phases 1, 2A and 2B, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility

The primary component of Phase 1 was the construction of a new 3-story West Stair and Elevator Tower. The scope of work included provision of a new chiller and cooling tower; new domestic water, sanitary waste mains, and storm drainage main; new paving and curbs; a new transformer and a new emergency generator.

Phase 2A involved construction of a new 2,200-sf Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility, including support areas which included sample preparation laboratory, control room, office, equipment room, and storage room.

The work for Phase 2B consisted of gut-renovation and modernization of the administrative offices, laboratories, and support areas for approximately 10,000 ft2 of the Center Wing. The work encompassed four (4) floors, the attic, and roof; and included asbestos and lead paint abatement, demolition, and complete renovation of the spaces within the phase limits of construction. Renovations included new partitions, doors, floors, ceilings, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical power and lighting systems, communication and fire alarm systems, and lightning protection.

Big Spring Water Treatment System

The Big Spring Water Treatment System (BSWTS) was constructed by Pangea, Inc. at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The new 300-gpm water treatment system removes mercury from groundwater discharged from Outfall 51 and groundwater collected in the basement sumps of Building 9201-2. This project was awarded under an existing Bechtel Jacobs Company (BJC) RA/DD contract.

The scope of work included the demolition of several small buildings, tanks, and transformers; characterization and disposal of debris; construction of the collection system; installation of the treatment system components; construction of a pre-fabricated metal building to house the system; and system testing and start-up support.

Stockton Lake Administration Building

The Stockton Administration Building consisted of a totally wood structure of approximately 8,000 square feet on a concrete slab on grade. Walls were wooden 2 x 6’s with a drywall interior and a brick veneer exterior. Because the original building was destroyed during a tornado in 2003, this structure was constructed with a 10” thick masonry concrete storm shelter/vault with a concrete roof and a steel door designed to withstand winds up to 210 mph. Roofing material was a commercial grade standing seam metal roof system. The lobby area had a 32 foot high ceiling constructed out of arched glue lam beams covered with exposed tongue and grooved oak decking spanning 28’. The west end of the building contained 11 offices for the Operations Manager, Conservation Agents, Water Patrol and other Administrative personnel. Also included were employee rest rooms (with showers), a mail room and a lunch eating area. The east end contained a public kitchen, rest rooms, and a conference area large enough to hold up to 100 individuals with all the modern audio visual amenities. Exterior card reader accesses were placed all entry doors along with a new security monitoring system.

Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Contaminated Waste Processor

The Contaminated Waste Processor was designed and constructed by Pangea, Inc. at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa. This project was awarded as a Task Order under an ID/IQ contract with USACE, Omaha District.

The facility consists of an incinerator and wet scrubber pollution control system and a 60 ft by 100 ft metal building that contains the incinerator, loading docks, offices, restrooms, and locker rooms.

Pangea worked closely with a subcontracted engineering firm, the incinerator manufacturer, and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant to design and construct the incinerator and wet scrubber systems in accordance with Iowa regulations for air emission. This was a complex contaminated waste treatment system with computerized controls, fuel lines, automated feed, and multiple pressurized water and discharge lines throughout the wet scrubber system.
