The 489-D Coal Pile Runoff Basin (CPRB), 484-10D Waste Oil Facility (WOF), and D-006 Outfall were all portions of the D-Area Powerhouse subunit located at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC to be closed per the scope of this project. Pangea was awarded a design/build contract from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions which required the design and removal of contaminated sediments at the D-006 Outfall, design and removal of contaminated soils at the 484-10D Waste Oil Facility, design and resizing of the Coal Storage Area with accompanying stormwater runoff work, design and closure of the northern 25% of the Coal Pile Runoff Basin with consolidation of contaminated material under a 2 foot soil cover over the closed northern portion of the CPRB. The 484-D Powerhouse remained operational during the project, which required coordination to minimize disturbance of coal delivery and movements. This project was performed entirely in-house by Pangea.

Pangea reconstructed the entire active sanitary sewerage system at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAP), Middletown, IA. Pangea replaced or improved over 80,000 lineal feet of gravity sewer, 2000 lineal feet of force mains, 2 lift stations, and over 300 manholes. The existing sewerage system was installed in the early 1940s and had developed significant groundwater infiltration. The rehabilitation of the sewers was completed by the wholesale replacement of the existing pipe or by the use of “cured-in-place” (CIP) pipe that is installed within the existing conduit.
Pangea and our design team determined a realignment of the new sewerage system under a Value Engineering effort that decreased the quantity of pipe replaced by over 6000 LF, eliminated the need for approximately 15 manholes, and by-passed major structures that were decrepit or otherwise not functioning properly. Our client realized savings of over $250,000 associated with the Value Engineering design. The realignment also eliminated construction through one of the most environmentally sensitive areas of the plant along Brush Creek. This increased the savings of costs and schedule by eliminating the need for special permits and wetlands considerations in the design and construction of the sewerage system.
Portions of the work were conducted in areas contaminated with explosive constituents and hydrocarbons. Pangea provided in-house resources to identify, monitor, and proper disposition of the wastes encountered from Pangea’s environmental division. The use of in-house personnel resulted in further cost savings for our client.
